People who enjoyed playing video games in the mid-80s and late ’90s must be familiar with the name “Bomberman”. A fun and engaging game that kept many of us entertained, it has survived and even gotten updated multiple times with so many years of technology, only to keep up with the modern standard of gaming.

Bomberman’s hype was so huge and over the top that everyone you know has at least played or tried to play this game once in their lives. Today, we will look at what Bomberman is all about and how the game is still keeping its popularity alive to this day.

What is Bomberman?

Originally released in Japan as “Bakudan Otoko” and developed by Hudson Soft in 1983 on the Fujitsu platform, the game quickly became a household name due to its simple yet engaging theme. The game operates on a strategic, maze-based setting, with users having a task to carry bombs and plant them to their desired area of attack. Later because of its popularity Bomberman was released in Europe in 1984 for the MSX and ZX platform and the name was changed for the European community from Bakudan Otoko to what we know today as “Bomberman”.

Why Bomberman Is Popular for Everybody?

Since 1983, there have been multiple upgrades of this game that are being published to this day. The Bomberman iconic character has been featured in almost 60 different games, that were either the new publications of Bomberman or the knockoffs. Due to its simple settings and themes, Bomberman became commercially successful, and considering the popularity, the creators introduced a multiplayer feature for more people to engage at the same time.

Till today, Bomberman has sold over 10 million units of games, which easily justifies how much people liked it. Bomberman is easy to understand because of its grid-based action. People of all ages can easily play without being confused about the controls, the story, and even the settings.

Bomberman Game Setting

In Bomberman, players are allocated to an area where they have to destroy the soft blocks to uncover hidden items. This is done by strategically placing bombs. Since Bomberman was originally published, it is continuously adding new hidden items to keep the audience hooked to its unpredictable settings. Certain items are necessary for the game to destroy the opponent and the player capacity has increased over the years from 1 to almost 10 players including both offline and online modes.

On top of this, Bomberman is the one game that is being plagiarized the most in almost every country. At one point it was declared the most plagiarized video game in history. This is because it has a setting and programming that is required to clone a game. Over time, many unauthorized knockoffs circulated in the gaming sphere all having the same Bomberman aesthetics. Apart from all these knockoffs Bomberman still strives to this day to be one of the most frequently played games of all time.
